Key points:An ex-police officer was jailed for life for raping and sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman in Victoria’s west-endIn February, the woman’s family were notified about the sexual assault by policeBut the woman later died in hospitalThe man, who has since died, is on trial in the High Court over the alleged sexual assault in the early hours of February 27.
In her statement to the court, the 27-year-old woman’s sister said she was “in shock” when she received the news and that the woman had been “in bed all night” and that she did not know where she was and when she was raped.
The woman said her sister had been drinking heavily and was “totally drunk” when they met at the bar the night before.
The court heard the woman was intoxicated when they first met at a house party at a local home in the city’s east-end, which she had not been to in some time.
The following day, the family received a call from Victoria Police’s Legal Aid Service stating the woman died in their care, and the police were conducting an investigation.
On February 28, Victoria Police launched an investigation into the alleged incident.
In his statement to police, the man’s sister described her sister as “drunk, confused, confused”.
“She was in bed all the time, not able to say where she is, and she was in tears,” she said.
The man was arrested by police on February 29 and is charged with two counts of rape.
He was remanded in custody until his next appearance in the court on March 3.
